Please follow our studio principles so you and your fellow students can make the most of your time in the space. You should also feel empowered to call someone out if they’re not sticking to the principles or make the Space Supervisor aware.
1.Book your space
You’ll need to have a space reserved in the Studio to work – don’t worry if you haven’t had chance to book you can scan the QR on arrival, but to avoid disappointment it’s always best to book in advance.
We have a dedicated MS Booking page for Studio 1&2.
For Studio 3 – exhibition and events space, request to book via ccwpeckhamlevels@arts.ac.uk and your space will be reserved for you.
Once you book a space you commit to using it for the duration of your booking – please don’t leave spaces regularly unoccupied.
2. Say “Hello”
We want to build a friendly supportive learning community here at Peckham Levels, so let other students working in the space know that you’re here with a quick “Hi”, and intro if you don’t know each other.
Because you’re working off campus and in a public space, it’s even more important to be reassured that everyone around you should be there, too. And of course, let the Space Supervisor know you’re in – she loves a smile and a wave!
In the case of an evacuation for H&S, fire regulations etc. in addition to checking in with everyone, please always sign in and sign out on the day sheet on the front desk.
3. Take in your surroundings
You’ve booked a spot and that’s yours for the length of your slot but you’re also working in the whole studio space together with your fellow student makers – altogether you’re responsible for creating a safe accessible working environment for everyone.
Our studios are flexible, agile spaces so may change from day to day – always be alert your working environment. Pay attention to the other students around you and what they’re doing, make sure routes around the studios are clear – so everyone can get around, and if needs be, can evacuate the space easily. Charge devices safely, without creating a trip hazard.
Report all accidents or incidents no matter how trivial – in person with the studio supervisor or email ccwpeckhamlevels@arts.ac.uk
4. Be respectful
Be inclusive and part of the team.
In the studio – think of your fellow student makers, for example keep the noise down, take phone calls outside and listen to music on headphones…Avoid eating messy and/or smelly food…Be aware of your content – be ethical, respect diversity and avoid offence to other students…Consider wellbeing – your own and the emotional space of those around you.
When you go – leave the space clean and tidy for other student makers, put all equipment back in its place ready for the next person, take away any papers or other materials with you.
In Peckham Levels – this is an important community partnership for UAL, as well as enhancing your own professional practice you’re an ambassador for the University so remember you’re responsible for its reputation when enjoying yourself in the bars, cafés and public spaces as well as the studios
5. Manage your own making
This is a shared space for self-directed learning through making, there’s no teaching.
The Space Supervisor is on site to make sure the studios run smoothly and safely and offer advice and guidance about working in the space but not about your work.
Tutors will visit from time to time, but all formal teaching, crits and instruction will take place back on site at our Peckham Road or Wilson Road colleges. You’ll be expected to continue to engage with all scheduled learning and teaching as part of your course.
Your time in the studio is an opportunity to make work, explore and exchange ideas. You can take risks with your practice and experiment with the support of your fellow students. It’s a chance to foster ways of workings that might become a blueprint for setting up your own sustainable studio collectives after college.
6. No storage
The studios are your working space so for the duration of the session you have booked in you can keep work in progress where you’re working as long as it doesn’t pose a hazard for others. However, once work is made it should be photographed, and then removed. Discussion and assessment will also happen on site back at college.
There’s no permanent storage for work or any other possessions.
Please don’t hoard materials in booked areas, use the material banks, reuse and recycle bins provided in the studios.
If you intend to bring any personal tools (other than your computer) with you, please speak with your tutor in advance to ensure that the tools are low risk and don’t require onsite technical support. The studios must remain a low-risk environment.
You can also leave the tools in the studio for the duration of your booking but strictly at your own risk.
7. Be safe
Peckham Levels is members-based organisation, you’ll be joining a thriving hub of diverse independent, creative businesses. UAL is expected to be good tenant and all students to work respectfully alongside our neighbours.
We need to adhere to some ‘housekeeping’ rules. Breaching these can affect our contract, damage our relationship with Peckham Levels and UAL’s reputation.
These rules are also about keeping everyone safe, so please observe the following:
Alcohol should only be consumed in the bar areas and smoking is permitted in designated areas only. Strictly no drugs are allowed on the premises.
Toilet facilities are shared – please respect our neighbours. No paints or other art materials should be washed in the sinks or taken out onto the public areas.
Because there are no work sinks in the studios only dry processes are allowed – no messy work such as clay.
All students must do an in-person Health & Safety induction before using the students so you are aware of all emergency procedures.
No drilling into walls is allowed, fixing artwork to walls should be done with tape, blu-tac or other temporary fixing or by pining into false walls/boards only – specific arrangement will be made for exhibitions and events.
No flammable materials and adhesives are allowed on site.
All equipment you want to bring into the studios must be approved by your tutor.
Don’t dispose of materials in the general waste, always use the facilities provided in the studios.
Always move heavy objects, like furniture and equipment with someone else, and make sure the Space Supervisor know what you’re doing.
Only use ladders if you’ve done ‘working at height’ training and follow the correct procedure.
Charge devices safely and don’t overload or ‘daisy chain’ extension leads.
Follow best practice for cutting, always using a mat and dispose of blades in the sharps bins.
